Tomato Varieties
How to Grow Juicy Tasty Tomatoes
Part 1 – What to Grow
There are so many varieties available these days (over 10,000), it’s a bit daunting to try and figure out which one is going to be most suitable for you.
Here are some of the key questions you need to answer.
Q. Is it better to grow from seed or seedlings?
A. There are advantages and disadvantages of both. Seedlings are easier, but you are quite limited with variety. Growing from seed gives you access to thousands of wonderful varieties, but you will need to follow a few steps to maximise germination and reduce transplant shock.
Q. Should I buy a determinate or indeterminate variety?
A. The type you choose depends on your situation and climate. Determinates are favoured by professional growers as the fruit ripens all at once making them ideal for commercial harvesting. Indeterminates continue to grow and produce new flowers and fruit for as long as they are alive, making them ideal for home growers who want a regular supply of tomatoes over the summer.
Q. Hybrid or heirloom tomatoes – which is better?
A. If you want a variety which has been bred to resist some of the more common diseases you will need to choose a hybrid. However with some of these you might be sacrificing flavour. If you want good old fashioned full flavour, you need an heirloom. These have been around for a long time and there’s thousands of them. But they too have their own unique advantages and disadvantages, and some of them can be quite difficult to find. However there are a number of specialty places you can go to for rare seeds, and it is well worth the effort.
Q. Which tomato variety should I choose?
A. What are you going to do with your tomatoes? Eat them in salads, make sauces, stuff them or dry them? You may need a couple of varieties if you want to do all of these things.
