Tomato Fertilizing
How to Grow Juicy Tasty Tomatoes
Part 4 – Nourishing your plants
Q. What should I add to the soil?
A. All plants enjoy substantial amounts of organic matter – manure or compost in the soil. Organic matter holds nutrients in the soil so that they are not lost through leaching. However compost takes time to break down, so it’s best to also add some fertilizer, but not in direct contact with the roots.
Q. How much organic matter do I need to add?
A. You’ll need to add about 3kg of organic matter to every square metre (or yard) of soil one month prior to planting. If it’s compost your adding, it is really important that it has been properly prepared and contains the right balance of ingredients. Composting is easy to do when you know how. Humus is also another secret ingredient that professional farmers use and it is really worthwhile finding out more about this black magic.
Q. Should I add fertilizer at planting time?
A. Professional farmers dip seedlings in a special fertilizer at transplant time to give the roots a big boost and help the plant to establish a lot quicker than conventional methods. This organic, widely available substance is highly effective, yet not well known in the home gardening community. When you have large healthy roots, your plant is less susceptible to disease. You should also apply a starter fertilizer mix (which involves applying the right balance of NPK) to give your plants a kick start.
Q. Do tomatoes require fertilizer other than NPK?
A. Occasionally your tomatoes will show that they are short of a trace element and in certain conditions there may be a shortage of several trace elements. The absence of one crucial trace element is the main cause of one of the most common diseases. Once you have identified a trace element deficiency (by referring to deficiency photos and symptom descriptions) it is fairly easy to correct it so that your plant recovers.
Q. Will I need to vary the fertilizer mix at different growth stages?
A. Each of the major and trace elements has one or several functions to perform within the plant, and so it is important that they receive the right element at the right time. For example, it is not wise to give your plants too much nitrogen during the fruit development stage, however they will need other elements to help fruit to grow, ripen and sweeten. Likewise the mix of NPK which you apply during flowering is different to the mix at planting.
